Vienna is facing a spell of harsh winter weather as GeoSphere Austria issues a severe cold warning for the capital, Lower Austria, and parts of eastern Austria. While much of the country enjoys clear skies and sunshine, the east remains locked in a deep freeze.
Persistent Fog in the West and South
Across western and southern regions, pockets of fog and low stratus clouds linger throughout the day. Basin and valley areas are particularly affected, especially in East Tyrol and Carinthia, where some locations may remain grey and dim from morning to evening.
Eastern Austria Stays Deeply Wintery
Temperatures across the east and south remain firmly in sub-zero territory. According to GeoSphere Austria, daytime highs range only from –4°C to +2°C. Conditions are noticeably milder in the west: from Vorarlberg to western Lower Austria, temperatures climb to between +2°C and +9°C, with the warmest readings found near Austria’s western borders.
Wind Intensifies the Chill
What makes the cold particularly biting is the wind. A brisk easterly to southeasterly airflow affects the north and east, as well as föhn-prone areas north of the Alpine crest. This wind significantly lowers the perceived temperature. In Vienna, the wind chill during the day drops to around –8°C, making outdoor conditions feel especially harsh despite occasional sunshine.
Authorities advise residents to dress warmly, limit time outdoors when possible, and take extra care of vulnerable individuals during this period of severe cold.
